Kodachrome Basin State Park is a really cool spot located just south of Cannonville via a seven-mile paved road. There is a fairly large campground here that is pretty popular, so if you want to ensure you get a spot you will need to plan ahead, or visit during a less-popular time of year. When I visited in December of 2011, the campground was closed, and I had the entire park to myself. When I returned in November of 2017, I was surprised to see the campground mostly full. There are a lot of really cool hikes located close by, such as Round Valley Draw, Grosvenor Arch, Willis Creek and Bull Valley Gorge, so it would make a really nice base camp.
The park itself is also worth a visit in and of itself. There are many tall rock chimneys located around the park that are fun to look at, as well an arch. The park includes six trails. Most of them are short loop hikes of two miles or less that take you by some of the more impressive rock features within the park. If you want a bit longer walk you can hike the Panorama Trail, which is approximately six miles round-trip. Kodachrome Basin is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area, but due to there being a large campground located in the middle of it, expect to see a lot of people if you go during a popular time of year.
